New Pingo data shows 31% of trips replace single passenger vehicle trips and shows 26 passenger-per-hour peak using shuttles on-demand

TRC’s Pingo app increasingly taking vehicles off the road while delivering industry-leading efficiency and maintaining minimal waits for shared rides

November 27, 2023 New York, New York, USA: The Routing Company (“TRC”), a global on-demand vehicle routing and management platform partnering with cities to power the future of public transit, today shared new data from Ride Pingo™ users that demonstrates a remarkable 31% of trips occur in place of single occupancy vehicle trips, meaning more cars taken off the road.

TRC measures passengers moved by “PAX” – the number of people moved in a vehicle per revenue hour through its Pingo app. Using TRC’s Pingo platform, operators can regularly fill 18-person shuttles with on-demand point to point service.

In addition to helping reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, Pingo has proven its effectiveness as a shared ride solution. The data, drawn from a recent Pingo user survey, illustrates that Pingo is delivering industry-leading efficiency on a steady and increasing basis throughout 2023.

At its peak, TRC’s routing engine powered the pickup of 26 passengers in one vehicle hour (versus industry average of 3-4) via the Pingo app, and its seat utilization continues to be unmatched at an average PAX of 9.5 (versus industry average of 1.5).

"We have long maintained Pingo’s ability to deliver unmatched efficiency for both riders and drivers, powered by our cutting edge routing algorithm,” said James Cox, Chief Executive Officer, TRC. “The impact of this is higher utilization of vehicles and lower GHG emissions and lower traffic congestion. What’s remarkable though, is that we’re able to delight riders at the same time, with 20% of our riders taking more than ten trips a month.”

TRC has proven it can deliver a higher utilization of vehicles compared to industry competitors, meaning more riders per vehicle per hour – in turn meaning maximized ride pooling to reduce single occupancy trips.

Its industry-leading efficiencies can be seen across academic/campus, transit agency, corporate, non-emergency medical transit, and private operator deployments; differentiated by aspects of unmatched (lowest) price-per-seat, connection to existing transit networks, and leveraging one app for multiple transit services.

California’s FAST Transit has seen more than doubled on-demand ridership since launching commingled paratransit service with TRC in September.

The service, using existing paratransit vehicles, replaced unproductive fixed routes and since launch has seen over 500 app downloads, over 60% booking within the Ride Pingo™ app (versus call-ins), and more than 5,000 people moved.

The data shows users consistently rating Pingo 4.9 out of 5.0 stars, maintaining extreme customer love while delivering operational efficiency. Not only does Pingo provide mobility where there were few options before, but it does so with minimal inconvenience to riders: the average wait time for a shared ride is less than 15 minutes, with less than five minutes of in-car delay for shared rides once in transit.

“The latest survey data speaks volumes,” continued Cox. “We are beyond pleased to see these results come to fruition: taking single-occupancy cars off the road, providing significantly more affordable on-demand transportation, increasing accessibility to transit, and offering a service that’s reliable for riders. Put simply, shared rides work.”

Over 3,000 people rely on Pingo every week, with over 700,000 passengers moved to date. Year to date, there are over 13,000 unique app riders regularly using Ride Pingo™.

TRC’s award-winning Pingo platform includes the Drive Pingo™ and Ride Pingo™ apps and the Pingo Dashboard™ operations management tool, which together provide on-demand, paratransit, fixed, and flexible transport that enhances ridership of existing transport networks.
